The Junior Ski Patrol is a program designed to give young adults between the ages of 13 and 18 a chance to see what is involved in being a ski patroller.
Youths enrolled in the program first go through an interview process. Once selected, they are given an 8-hour first aid course, from which, upon successful completion, they will receive a Red Cross Emergency First Aid Certificate.
When the snow finally arrives, the junior patrollers receive a full orientation of mountain facilities, as well as a CPR examination. Then, we hit the slopes. Juniors receive a skiing or boarding evaluation (to which there is no minimum requirement). |
But it's not all hard work.
- There are several perks to being on the Junior Patrol. These can include:
- Snow cave camp-out weekend.
- Free skiing / boarding lessons
- A trip to another mountain (every second year, usually). This year, we are tentatively planning a trip to Golden.
- Avalanche-awareness seminar
- First Aid competitions at a local, southern BC, and possibly even National level
- The opportunity to meet lots of other youths in the area with the same interests
- Free skiing or boarding while on shift, with extra day passes to be earned
- A ton of fun!!!
