Who can join the CSPS?
Anyone who is 18 years old and is a strong intermediate Nordic/Alpine skier or Boarder is eligible to join. As a member of the CSPS, you should be able to handle all the types of terrain and snow conditions you would encounter at the areas serviced by the Ogopogo Zone, namely Big White, Big White cross-county trails, Crystal Mountain Alpine and Nordic and Telemark Ski Areas. All outdoor oriented individuals looking for fun, adventure, team atmosphere, learning valuable new skills as well as days and weekends away from the hustle and bustle, surrounded by good people and snow, join the CSPS - Ogopogo Zone volunteer ski patrol. Patrollers receive various benefits, depending on where they patrol. If you wish to become a member of this dynamic organization, send an email to anyone of the executives. Our first aid training starts in September each year, and ski or board evaluations are in November.

A Typical Day with CSPS

Before the lifts open to the public, the patrol checks each open area to ensure that all the trails and lifts are safe. Throughout the day, you will ski and ride most areas of the resort covering the entire area. In the event of a mishap, you will act as part of a team to provide first-aid and transportation to medical assistance. All patrollers are equipped with two-way radios to ensure both rapid response and support from your team. Working in conjunction with resort area management and staff, patrollers maintain a high level of visibility, answering questions and promoting safety among the public.

At the end of the day, you will once again “sweep” the mountain to make sure no one is in need of assistance. Finally, patrollers rendezvous at the Patrol Hut to debrief before finishing their shift. Night Skiing As night skiing is offered at both Big White and Crystal Mountains throughout the season, CSPS members are rostered for some night time shifts. At both resort areas, midweek patrolling is provided on evenings that the areas are open.
